Tornado facts and information

Tornadoes occur all over the world, but most frequently in the United States. These tornadoes mostly appear east of the Rocky Mountains. In an average year more than 800 tornadoes occur nationwide. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air. It extends from the cloud it was originated from until it reaches the ground. Destroying anything and everything in its path. Tornado winds can reach over 250 miles per hour! That is faster than most cars can achieve. The cause of a tornado is warm, moist winds from the Gulf of Mexico collide with cold, dry winds from Canada. This drastic change in temperature and air pressure create a funnel that eventually reaches the Earth. It is an untrue statement that area near river, lakes, and other bodies of water are safe. Tornadoes occur everywhere! A tornado that occurs on water is called a water sprout and can be just as dangerous as any other tornado.
